Over 1,000 frottages were made of surfaces in and around the artist's temporary studio in Dubai. Eventually all rubbings were scanned and animated with the artist's feet walking over the different surfaces. This is an abstract simulation, a double of the real that preserves its raw, yet exacting, impressions from the nuances of place and time. (this animation was developed from an artist’s book made with the frottages during the artist’s Alserkal-Delfina residency)

Mein participated as an artist-in-residence of Art Dubai in 2015, partnered with the Delfina Art Foundation, and was awarded an Alserkal Avenue artist commission project in 2016. In 2022 she participated in the New Roots Foundation artist residency in Antigua, Guatemala.
Over the last twenty years, Mein has developed her research around the physicality of images, supports and the limits of language. In her work, the line is a fundamental element with which the artist engages in its most diverse forms and materials. First as a trace, contour, and rifts in her drawings and video animations, and then as materiality in the unraveling of the weaves on cotton canvases, hemp bags, looms, and lace. Through the line, the artist explores contradictions and porosities between support and artwork, intellectual and manual labour, finished and unfinished, artist and artisan.

With the grim economic crisis in argentina, Mein has observed the increasing number of informal street vendors selling cleaning cloths due to rampant unemployment. The artist collects dish cloths and incorporates their geometric precariousness in new paintings and drawings as part of her on-going research on the physicality of images and the structure of their supports.

The show features an installation of video-animations, as well as a set of geometric, woven works on hemp. The exhibition unfolds from a decade-long investigation about the physicality of images and the importance of the supports, surfaces and techniques. Jessica employs obsolete materials found in places where she lived, such as printed hemp spice bags, images of accumulated electricity wires from the city of Dubai, as well as residual billboards from São Paulo and Buenos Aires.

Part of the technique used by the artist is to interrupt the textile of the fabric, reconfiguring it in new delicate and varied geometric patterns. Mein’s process also employs dyeing using the carbon, which transfers colour to the fabric that absorbs the ink throughout its composition, front and back.

The exhibition is comprised of a central video animation and a series of monochrome wall works. Desvio (2016) shown on a large-scale monitor, is generated from fragments of a strip of found billboard material originally sourced from the back of a fifty-meter awning in Dubai. Each individual frame is initially scanned, then printed and further abstracted through various methods of incising, rubbing, cutting, zooming, mirroring, and finally captured again on a flatbed scanner.

The exhibition originates from the artist's interest in the increasingly obsolete paper billboards from her hometown of São Paulo. Using discarded billboard prints as a primary source material, Mein concentrates on its errors, glitches and folds - the break in the mechanical that renders it unique.
